Official Secrets 2019 Review

Official Secrets Review 2019

Official Secrets is a new true life story brought to us by our friends at IFC Films and features a career best Keira Knightly as Katherine Gun also a top notch Ralph Finnes as Ben Emmerson and a scene stealing Matt Smith as Martin Bright. The plot is a difficult one but a satisfying feeling when it pays off and for its endgame it’s phenomenal. Gavin Hood also directs his masterpiece here.

If you’re not familiar of what the official secret act is this is a description of it The Official Secrets Act (Cap. 213, 2012 Rev. Ed.) prohibits the disclosure of official documents and information. The Act was first introduced to Singapore in 1935 as the Official Secrets Ordinance. Section 5 of the Act prohibits the wrongful communication of information that is considered sensitive by the government.

As Katharine Gun receives a memo from the NSA with a shocking directive: the United States is enlisting Britain’s help in collecting compromising information on U.N. Security Council members to blackmail them into voting in favor of an invasion of Iraq. She unravels at this revelation and is unable to just stand by and this is where it’s a cat and mouse game where the movie is at its best and is constantly great whereas some movies with this kind of story struggle per example “The Day Shall Come”.

If you’re also interested in what the movie is based on here it is : The Spy Who Tried to Stop a War; by Marcia & Thomas Mitchell.

Final notes:

This movie features powerhouse performances from all of its cast including a career best from Keira Knightley and an Oscar worthy Ralph Fiennes.

Grade:

4/5 stars
